Dialogue Should Reveal Character

Every line of dialogue in a novel has one job: reveal something. Who the character is. What they want. What they're hiding. How they relate to the person they're speaking to.

Dialogue that doesn't reveal anything — filler dialogue, information dumps, or on-the-nose emotional declaration — slows the story and exhausts readers.

Before revising any dialogue, ask: what does this conversation reveal that readers don't already know?

Avoid Flat Dialogue

Flat dialogue sounds like people in real life — which is, counterintuitively, a problem. Real conversations are full of "um," "yeah," small talk, and circuitous routes to the point. In fiction, dialogue needs to be heightened — more pointed, more revealing, more interesting than real conversation.

Flat dialogue avoids conflict. Strong dialogue generates it.

Add Action Beats

Action beats — small physical actions that happen during dialogue — do three things: they slow the scene's pace, they show character through body language, and they break up dialogue so it doesn't read as floating text.

"She set down her cup" tells you more about someone's internal state than many lines of narration. Actions reveal.

Alternate dialogue with action beats. Let the physical world exist inside the conversation.

Keep Character Voice Consistent

Every character should sound different. Not just in vocabulary, but in rhythm, in how directly they say what they mean, in what they choose not to say.

A villain who speaks in complete, measured sentences. A nervous character who trails off mid-thought. A confident character who speaks in short declaratives. These patterns should be consistent throughout the story.
