How to Write Better With AI Without Sounding Like AI

Start With Your Own Idea

The most important rule: AI should improve your thinking, not replace it. Start with your own idea, argument, scene, or story — even if it's rough. The writing you produce from scratch, however imperfect, is infinitely more authentic than anything an AI generates without your input.

Give AI your rough draft. Never ask AI to start from nothing.

Use AI for Clarity First

Before asking AI to add creativity, depth, or style, ask it to improve clarity. Can every sentence be understood on first read? Is the argument logical? Does each paragraph do what it promises?

Clarity is the foundation everything else stands on. AI is genuinely excellent at improving it — and improving clarity rarely erases voice the way heavy creative rewrites do.

Set your AI Influence Slider to 15–30% and use Enhance mode for a clarity pass first.

Avoid Generic Phrasing

AI tends toward the generic because it's trained on average writing. Review the output carefully for phrases you'd never say out loud:

  • •"In today's world" → Start with the specific thing happening in your world
  • •"It is important to note" → Just note it
  • •"As we can see" → Show them; don't narrate
  • •"In conclusion" → Conclusions don't need announcing

Written's Humanizer highlights these phrases and suggests replacements.

Add Specific Human Detail

AI generates generalizations. Humans write specifics. The fastest way to make AI-assisted writing sound human is to inject specifics after every AI pass:

  • •A specific name instead of "a business professional"
  • •A specific number instead of "many people"
  • •A specific scene instead of "a difficult situation"
  • •A specific emotion instead of "felt bad"

One specific detail makes a paragraph sound more human than any amount of AI humanization.

Keep Sentence Variety

Review the AI output's sentence lengths. If they're all the same length, break the rhythm manually. Short sentences create punch. Long sentences build context, add nuance, and create momentum before landing on the main point.

Variety is one of the clearest markers of human writing. Uniformity is the clearest marker of AI writing.

Use Humanized Mode

After any AI editing pass, run your text through Written's Humanizer Mode. It identifies the specific phrases and rhythmic patterns that mark the text as AI-assisted and helps you improve naturalness.

This is the step most AI writing workflows skip — and it's the most important one for producing text that sounds genuinely human.

Keep Your Voice

At the end of every AI editing session, read your text aloud. Does it sound like you? Are there sentences you'd never say? Word choices that feel foreign?

If something sounds off, change it. The AI Influence Slider is a suggestion machine, not an authority. Your voice is the final editor. Always.
